Permeable Pavers

Permeable Pavers describes the specialized process of implementing a paving system upon an open graded base. A permeable system is designed to store water in the base material so it can be released back into the soil. These systems reduce runoff, recharge groundwater, and can eliminate the need for detention ponds. Permeable pavers are produced with larger spacing or channels within the bricks. This separation allows water to run through the paver. This allows up to 80% of the water to run through as compared to about 4% with non-permeable pavers.

Permeable pavers are produced in a wide range of shapes and colors. They cost about the same as regular pavers. There is a slightly higher installation cost associated with their use due to the added excavation of the sub-soil and more base material that is being used.

Due to their ability to expand and other factors such as the redistribution of weight over a wide area, permeable pavers are much longer lasting than blacktop and concrete. An additional benefit is their reusability, they can be used on a different property or tract of land.
